Band Biographies

RODDY AKERS, LEAD SINGER

Picture
Roddy  is a native Charlestonian and was born and raised in the James  Island area where he began his music career at the age of 5, singing at his local church. His formal training included voice lessons and his first band at the age of 15. Roddy was a member of the high school chorus at Fort  Johnson High School and his interest in music lead him to enrolling in David  Lispcomb College Nashville where his real interest in country music began. He studied music and the arts and did a brief stint with a local Nashville Band “The Gators” performing in clubs around the area. Roddy, an accomplished composer, has penned numerous songs including a compellation featured on his independently produced album “Music City Life”. He has been in several local bands in the Charleston area, but as he always comments, “This is the best band I’ve been in since I started”.

PHILLIP HUMBERT, BASS GUITAR, VOCALS

Picture
Phillip began with playing blues on the harmonica as a teenager. Later, he gained a fondness for Bluegrass music. In 1978, He bought his first fiddle (violin) and began to teach himself. He was involved with some other local musicians and  developed an interest in playing the electric bass guitar. He got his first bass guitar as a surprise gift from some close friends and started playing it. He was introduced to what would be the Mason-Dixon band in March 2005.

SCOTT BUCHOLTZ, DRUMS

Picture
Born in the late 60’s Scott was raised on Elvis, The Allman Brothers, and Lynyrd Skynyrd.  While he always dreamed that he could play guitar, drums are his natural and now preferred instrument.  He began working in a band before the end of the 70’s.  After many years of playing anything and everything - Blues, Classic Rock, Jazz, Funk and even Standards, he spent the last decade in “retirement”.  In early 2010, work brought him down to the Charleston area.  Upon his arrival, a stroke of luck sent him to a Lowcountry Blues Club jam, he’s been thrilled to be jamming and sitting in with much of the area’s best talent ever since.  His passion for Southern Rock makes him a natural fit for today’s Country Music and the Mason Dixon Band.

RYAN LEE, GUITAR

Picture
Ryan Lee  is a native of Northern Virginia (don’t worry, it’s below the Mason-Dixon line) and has lived in Charleston for seven years. Ryan started playing guitar in his teenage years and absorbed many styles of music but his desire lies in keeping it simple and stripped-down. Ryan has been playing music in Charleston for several years and has even had the privilege of playing music with Fountains of Wayne guitarist Jody Porter. Seeking a  solid, working band in the Charleston area, Ryan answered an ad on Craig’s List  that asked for a second guitarist in the Mason Dixon Band. Two auditions and several beers later, Ryan was welcomed as the fifth member of the band.
